Get In The Back Of The Van are an emerging contemporary theatre group based in East London.
We created promotional flyers for their co-production of Caryl Churchill’s seminal modern play Drunk Enough To Say I Love You?
Two of the central themes of the play are the notions of things/people not fitting together and a ‘flat-pack’ lifestyle. We created illustrations akin to assembly instructions that come with flat-pack furniture. The pieces in the diagrams don’t fit perfectly together, and parts of the instructions themselves are unfinished and in need of assembly.
The flyer uses a two-column grid that suggests an obvious order, but there is no apparent order horizontally. This creates a chaotic sense of space, and has its roots in Swiss/Modernist graphic design that makes use of functional yet unexpected layouts to create interest.
